Fort Ticonderoga, located in New York, was a key military fort during the 18th century, controlling access between Canada and the American colonies. It changed hands several times between the French, British, and Americans. In 1777, during the American Revolution, British forces placed artillery on nearby Mount Defiance—a hill overlooking the fort. This strategic move made Fort Ticonderoga indefensible, forcing the Americans to abandon it without a fight. The event is a classic example of how controlling high ground can determine the outcome of a battle.
Walk into the ornate 1888 Building and take a step back in time to learn about Ticonderoga’s industrial history at the Heritage Museum. Discover the Ticonderoga Pencil’s origin and the many stages of what is now known as International Paper. In addition to operating as a museum, the 1888 Building also hosts children’s summer artist workshops during the months of July and August and has a gift shop of local artists’ pieces.
Located beside the bronze Liberty Monument in Moses Circle, the Hancock House is a replica of the original stone Hancock residence. This grand building is home to the Ticonderoga Historical Society and features three floors of local history, including a gift shop. Inside, you'll find richly decorated rooms, historical fashion displays, recreated bedrooms, and rotating exhibits that bring Ticonderoga’s past to life.
Ticonderoga is uniquely situated on two major lakes, including the vast 125-mile-long Lake Champlain, which it shares with New York and Vermont. Both locals and visitors love the scenic Fort Ti Ferry—a historic and charming shortcut to Vermont, known as one of North America’s oldest ferry crossings. The Ticonderoga Boat Launch on Lake Champlain is a favorite spot for fishing enthusiasts and hosts several bass tournaments annually.
